Bear - Archery and Firearms Seasons
2009-2010 Hunting Regulations

Archery Season

Season Limit: 1
Statewide: October 17, 2009 – November 21, 2009

One bear may be taken with a bow during the bear archery season. No person may take more than one bear annually during the archery and firearms seasons combined.

The use of dogs while bow hunting for black bear is illegal during the bear archery season.

Firearms Season

Season Limit: 1

May Hunt Bear with or without Dogs | May Not Hunt Bear with Dogs

One bear may be taken during the bear firearms seasons. No person may take more than one bear annually in archery and firearms seasons combined.

Counties not listed are closed to firearms bear hunting.

A bow, but not a crossbow, may be substituted for a firearm during bear firearms season.

Special Seasons and Restrictions

*Nathaniel Mountain WMA

A special controlled Black Bear season will be open on Nathaniel Mountain WMA in Hampshire County. Hunters who use dogs must apply for a permit between October 1-31, 2009, at the District 2 DNR office in Romney (304-822-3551) which will allow for one party of no more than four hunters and eight dogs to hunt on the WMA for a selected twoday period. Hunters who hunt without dogs may participate in bear hunting on the WMA during this season without having a special permit.
