Summer Job Opportunities at WV State Parks

 

   Experience nature while earning some extra money this summer. West Virginia state parks, forests and wildlife management areas are now accepting applications for summer temporary employment. These positions are great for people who enjoy working with others in a natural scenic environment. Positions are available at many locations within the state. The employment period usually runs from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day. Pay rates vary depending on job responsibilities.

 

•  Campground Attendant
This position begins Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Position requires general upkeep and control of campground. It may also include fee collection and camper registration, litter removal, bathhouse maintenance, security patrol, firewood sales and game equipment rental.

 

•  Park Attendant
This position also begins Memorial Day weekend and lasts through Labor Day. It requires work in areas such as maintenance and office work, game equipment rental, housekeeping assistance, food and merchandise sales, fee collection and general support services.

 

•  Summer Naturalist
The duration of this employment is mid May through Labor Day. Employees will be accountable for the planning and leading of weekly interpretation/recreation programs. Weekly program activities include planning, typing, copying and distribution, assisting in the planning special events, doing weekly and monthly reports and other duties. Program duties include presenting audio visual slide shows and movies, leading planned recreational activities such as softball, baseball, arts and craft projects and other activities. Skills desired for this position are West Virginia flora and fauna identification skills, general knowledge of the use of field guides, use of audio visual equipment, public speaking skills, ability to work with others, strong written and oral communications skills and the capacity for the completion of report forms.

 

•  Summer Lifeguard
This position begins on Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. It requires the overseeing of swimming pool or lake area, the prevention of accidents and rescue of swimmers, admission collection fees, maintenance of bathhouse and pool grounds and the enforcement of pool regulations. Skills desired for this position include a minimum of Basic Lifeguarding for poolside assignments, full lifeguard training for beach lifeguarding as certified by the Red Cross and a current standard First Aid card. Certain certifications such as Boy Scouts of America and YMCA will also be considered.
