Bike the Park Day at Chief Logan State Park May 17

            Chapmanville – A “Bike the Park Day” is scheduled May 17 at Chief Logan State Park,.  “Chief Logan has some fantastic trails and a great variety for some excellent riding,” according to Trish Clay, event spokeswoman. Bikers should meet at 10 a.m. at the locomotive near the Museum-in-the-Park.  Riders should bring lunch, and helmets are required equipment for the event.

            “Chief Logan State Park reflects the heritage of coal mining in its trails such as Coal Miner, and the trails offer riding for all skill levels.  “As is our practice, rides will be grouped by skill level and beginners are encouraged and welcome,” said Clay.

            Bike clinics will be conducted by Mark Poore, a nationally-recognized rider and instructor from Showshoe Mountain.

            Chief Logan State Park is located on Old Logan Road off of U.S. 119 near Chapmanville.  The state park offers camping, hiking/biking trails, Museum in the Park, waterslide, picnic shelters and family fishing opportunities. 

            The Museum in the Park is operated by the Division of Culture and History and houses collections from the area, includingquilts, mining influences and area interests. The new exhibit, “Remembering Buffalo Creek,” a solemn recollection of the Feb. 26, 1972, tragedy, is currently staged and open to the public.             Chief Logan Lodge is a companion park and feature a 75-room upscale lodge, full-service restaurant, indoor pool and fitness center, and a trail linking the two areas. The lodge opened in 2006. The trail located at the lodge is suitable for hiking and biking.
