Become an Island Volunteer in 2013

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. – Volunteering at Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park can be a fun and rewarding experience, and an opportunity to sign up is approaching.

“Working on the island and in the museum is a great way to learn about history and meet to people from all over the world,” said Pam Salisbury, who coordinates programming at the park.  “A ‘become a volunteer’ program is scheduled for Sunday, April 28, at 2 p.m. for anyone who is looking for volunteer work or to be more involved in keeping West Virginia history alive.”

Blennerhassett Island is open May through October; however, the mainland museum – the Blennerhassett Museum of Regional History – is open year-round.  To prepare for the upcoming island season, the Friends of Blennerhassett, a volunteer support group, are looking for individuals interested in joining a strong team of volunteers who give guided tours through the Blennerhassett mansion, work in two gift shops, serve as guests hosts at “Maple Shade” (the island’s Putnam-Houser house), serve as island greeters, and also drive the golf cart for physically challenged island guests. Volunteers also are needed to assist with the many special events on the island and at the museum.

The Friends of Blennerhassett information session for prospective volunteers at the Blennerhassett Museum is scheduled for Sunday, April 28, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. To register to attend, call the park office at 304-420-4800 by April 26 to register for this informal get-together. Free parking is available in the lots adjacent to the Blennerhassett Museum. Light refreshments will be served. The Museum is located at 137 Juliana Street (the corner of 2nd and Juliana streets) in downtown Parkersburg.
