Civil War Campfire program encore set July 12 at Pipestem Resort State Park
PIPESTEM, W.Va. – Three score and two individuals attended a special Civil War Campfire program at Pipestem State Park’s campground, a Summers County travel destination.
Luke Stevens developed the program last year when he first served as Pipestem’s seasonal naturalist. “This position became one of the most inspiring experiences of my life,” he said.
The Civil War Campfire program is designed to commemorate all who fought in the war, specifically those from the present-day southern region of West Virginia. Stevens impersonates a young CSA infantryman and uses the songs and stories of the war to lead guests through a coming-of-age journey of emotions. Featured songs include “Dixie,” “Goober Peas,” “Just Before the Battle, Mother,” and “Tenting on the Old Campground.”
Stevens’ persona is evident by his remarks of the program recently presented: “I had the pleasure of leading 62 visitors through the Civil War Campfire.”
A senior at Concord University in Athens, W.Va., Stevens is studying biology and geology, with hopes of working in the environmental resources or environmental education field. As part of his degree programs, Concord has him off to Colorado and to Greenland for geologic research later this summer. “I am grateful for these opportunities and the support of my state that has made this possible,” he said.
Stevens has one more Civil War Campfire program at Pipestem scheduled in 2013, on Friday, July 12. It is part of the Mountain State’s 150th birthday activities. The campfire is open to the public at no charge and begins at 7 p.m. at the park campground. In case of rain, the program will move indoors. The program is interactive and relaxed, welcoming all ages.
“Whether you call yourself a “Northerner” or “Southerner,” you will be welcomed to our fireside with a smile and an outstretched hand!” Stevens said.
