Weekend Activities at West Virginia State Parks, July 19-21
SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. – A variety of activities and events are scheduled at many of West Virginia’s state parks and forests the weekend of July 19-20, 2013. From Gospel Music at Camp Creek State Park to the second of four memorial hikes at Droop Mountain in recognition of the 150th year of the battle at Droop Mountain and West Virginia’s statehood, there is something to do outside with little to no cost to enjoy.
Carnifex Ferry State Park
Wise's Legion – Living History / Boot camp
“Wise’s Legion” is conducting a living history/boot camp at Carnifex Ferry Battlefield. This event’s goal is to educate the public about history and to recruit re-enactors while training new re-enactors. Details and outline of each day’s activities will post as available.
Blennerhassett State Park
“History of Bathrooms ... From Ancient Times to the 21st Century”
The “History of Bathrooms ... From Ancient Times to the 21st Century” will be presented by Dr. Ray Swick, West Virginia State Park Historian, and is planned for 1 p.m. in the museum conference area. The collection of potties in the 2013 exhibit “Behind Closed Doors – American Bathrooms Through the Ages,” is on display at the Museum of Regional History through Dece. 31, 2013.
Droop Mountain State Park
2nd & 3rd West Virginia Mounted Infantry Memorial Hike
Hike # 2 – July 22
2nd & 3rd West Virginia Mounted Infantry Memorial Hike. Start point will be near Hillsboro. This is a four-mile hike through some fields, but mostly privately owned woodland. The route is all uphill along a narrow ravine, at times very steep, with 800 feet in elevation change. It will involve negotiating a few large boulders, fallen trees and branches. No support vehicle will be provided; snacks, drinks, and personal items will have to be carried by hikers. Restrooms available at park at the end of the hike; otherwise relief relies on 1800s protocol. This will be a moderate to difficult hike and is expected to take three to four hours. Limited to 25 participants in good condition. Preregistration is required and necessary. Assemble at Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park office at 8 a.m. sharp.

Camp Creek State Park
Gospel Music Celebration
From 1 to 6 p.m., enjoy music by Render the Hearts, Robin Hatcher, The Hatfield Family, Rick Lilly, Heaven's Harmony and Alaskan Sun. There is no admission fee. Concessions available. Bring a chair or seat.

Cass Scenic Railroad State Park
Heisler/Old Spruce Run
A special run to Old Spruce departs at 10:30 a.m. with Heisler #6 working the rails. This locomotive was built in 1929 for the Bostonia Coal and Clay Products Company of New Bethlehem, Pa., as their #20, and is Heisler #6 today at Cass Scenic Railroad. She’s a standard class C-90 3 truck Heisler. Daily train trips to Whittaker Station and Bald Knob are also scheduled.
Cacapon Resort State Park
Irish Road Bowling
Enjoy an afternoon walk (and bowl) on the scenic roads of Cacapon State Park and share in the excitement of this ancient game of Irish Road Bowling. This sport is similar to fast-pitch softball and bowling but using a 28-ounce steel ball. Come and enjoy the fun!

Morgan County 5K Run/Walk
A run among the West Virginia hills is scheduled at Cacapon Resort. Participate in the Children’s fun run or challenge yourself to the 5K. Race starts at 8 a.m. Registration fees are required.

Pipestem Resort State Park
Stages Performance – Amphitheater Show
An evening of entertainment by several student groups of Stages Music School of Princeton. The show begins at 6 p.m. at the Pipestem outdoor amphitheater. There is a minimal charge to attend.
Berkeley Springs State Park
Summer Concert – Banana Express
Not traditional Bluegrass! This young but experienced quartet has become a regional sensation with an electrifying sound that is one big musical sandwich stuffed with blues, jazz, folk, old-time and bluegrass. It features a MASHing guitar, rockin' bass and old-timey fiddle with some mighty fine vocals.

North Bend State Park
North Bend hosts the 35th Annual International Sports Jamboree. This event engages physically challenged youth in the field of recreation. It has created opportunities through the sponsorship and commitment of dedicated volunteers.
In addition to the sports jamboree, these activities are also planned on Saturday, July 20 at North Bend State Park:
9:30 a.m. – Nature Center Open. From 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., come inside to enjoy arts, crafts, and our wildlife friends. Take a look around and marvel at the mysteries of nature.
2:30 p.m. – Tunnel 13 Hike. Experience the great outdoors with a spice of history mixed in. The trail is flat and easy to walk on. Participants will meet at the Nature Center.
4:00 p.m. – Cornhole. Challenge your friends and the park staff to an exciting game of cornhole. There will be a tournament if participation allows. Meet at the Nature Center.
