Harvest Day at Cass Scenic Railroad is Sept. 21, 2013

            CASS, W.Va. - Green foliage tipped in fall colors and crisp temperatures at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park is an invitation to Harvest Day activities Sept. 21.

            “In addition to the daily train runs – Bald Knob at noon, and Whittaker Station at 11 a.m. and again at 2 p.m. – there is a special Heisler to Old Spruce run,” said Monica Fleming, event coordinator at Cass Scenic Railroad. The Heisler to Old Spruce train departs from the depot at 10:30 a.m. Ticket sales are available for all four runs this Saturday by calling 304-456-4300.

Other activities at Cass Harvest Day, Sept. 21, 2013 include:

All day                          “Meet the Breed” - Bloodhound tracking and trailing events - picnic pavilion
9 a.m. – 5 p.m.            Apple butter making - parking lot area
9 a.m. – 5 p.m.            Don Watts book signing. Author of “Daybreak over Appalachia”
9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Cass Historical Museum Open (Kyle J. "Catty" Neighbors Logging Museum)
9:30 a.m. – noon         Irish Road Bowling; register at Visitor’s Center; bowling begins at 1 p.m.
10 a.m.                        Little Switzerland Cloggers performance, near depot
10:30 a.m.                   Heisler to Old Spruce train departure
11a.m.                         Whittaker Station train departure
Noon                            Bald Knob Train departure
2 p.m.                          Whittaker Station train departure

  • Cass Showcase Program – 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m., 4 p.m., 5 p.m.
    This is an interpretative presentation with diorama background about the history of Cass and the logging industry in the area.
  • Locomotive Shop Tours - Meet at the Visitor's Center flagpole to depart 9:45 a.m., 10:45 a.m., 11:30 a.m.; 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 3 p.m.
  • “Whistle Blow”          3:30 - 4:30 p.m. Depot - dependent upon availability of engines
  • Movie: "The Fifth String" presented by the park commentator and film participant Roger Cain in the Showcase Building.
