A Christmas Carol Dec. 14 at Cacapon State Park and other December activities

            BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. – Some of the best gifts are not wrappable, and that includes participating in activities at Cacapon State Park in Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

            “Visiting the park with friends or as a family is truly a gift when things seem to revolve around material things,” said Renee Fincham, Cacapon park naturalist. Cacapon offers some relief during the holidays to enjoy time and activities.

“A Christmas Carol” theater at Cacapon State Park – Saturday, Dec. 14

            A special event Dec. 14 at Cacapon features the classic story “A Christmas Carol.” Written by Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol is the story of a miserly man who is given a chance of redemption when three ghosts visit on Christmas Eve. This classic story will be told Reader’s Theatre Style by noted actor Gene Worthington and actress Karen Vuranch of Fayetteville, W.Va. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $12.50 per person. Nature Center Menagerie

            The nature center at Cacapon State Park houses a collection of taxidermy mounts. There are 19 birds, 15 mammals and 27 fish mounts that show past and present inhabitants of West Virginia. Additionally there are displays about reptiles and hands–on activities for animal tracks and signs, birds, skulls, geology and local Native American artifacts.

Discovery Walk, Craft and CCC Film – Saturday, Dec. 7

            Acorns and leaves are featured on the Late Fall Discovery Walk beginning at 10 a.m. Find out how oak woodlands change with the fall season and how wildlife prepares for winter. Meet naturalist Renee Fincham at the Nature Center to explore the natural wonders of the Cabin Loop Trail. This trail is approximately 1 mile with a few hills.

            A Holiday Inspired Craft is an individual or family activity at 1 p.m. Meet at the Nature Center and let your creativity begin. There is no fee.

            The Civilian Conservation Corps boys left a legacy that can still be enjoyed all over West Virginia in the forests they planted and parks they helped to build. A film about the CCC will be shown at 2:30 p.m. in the Nature Center.

Story of the Landscape Hike, Cardinal Ornament, Back Through Time Hike – Saturday, Dec. 14

            The Story of the Landscape is a wintry hike to learn about the marvels of the Ridge Trail. Meet at the Nature Center at 1 p.m. to begin the walk up and over the historic landscape of this 1 ½ mile trail.

            Make a holiday ornament modeled after the state bird of West Virginia, the cardinal. Use it as a decoration or give as a gift. This activity begins at 3 p.m. at the Nature Center.

            Back through Time is an easy walk beginning at 4 p.m. to learn about CCC Camp Morgan and the men who constructed many of the structures at Cacapon. The walk, led by naturalist Renee Fincham, begins at the Nature Center and is an easy 1 mile hike through the park.

Winter Wonderland Hike and Holiday Craft Making – Saturday, Dec. 21

            The Winter Wonderland Hike begins at 10 a.m. and will celebrate the Winter Solstice. Hikers meets at the nature center to hike the Ridge Trail that is approximately 1½ miles with a few hills.

            A family activity, this holiday-inspired craft-making activity begins at 1 p.m. at the Nature Center. There is no charge to participate.

Winter Tracking, Nature’s Tree Trimming – Saturday, Dec. 28

            Winter Tracking is a great way to learn about the diversity of wildlife and their behavior. At 1 p.m., a plaster-of-Paris track craft is scheduled. There is no charge to participate.

            Trimming Nature’s Tree includes creating treats for our feathered friends and then going out to the winter's landscape to decorate the trees with the bounty. The activity begins at 2 p.m.

New Year’s Eve Celebration – Tuesday, Dec. 31

            New Year’s Eve Celebration brings in 2014 at Cacapon and begins at 9 p.m. Celebrate with music, dancing, and a formal toast to start off a New Year. Overnight packages and dance-only packages are available by calling 304-258-1022. Reservations are recommended.

            Cacapon Resort State Park is located near Berkeley Springs in Morgan County. It is a year-round destination area that includes a lodge, cabins, restaurant, conference facilities, hiking, nature center and planned activities year-round. There is golf, horseback riding, swimming and other seasonal outdoor recreation. Cacapon Resort is near Berkeley Springs State Park.
