North Bend State Park’s Winter Wonder Weekend features Olympics theme, Jan. 17-19, 2014

            CAIRO, W.Va. - An Olympic-sized weekend of activities and fun is planned at the 2014 North Bend State Park Winter Wonder Weekend. The annual event theme is Winter Olympics and includes crafts, games, parade and carnival. Outdoor winter sports feature sled riding (weather permitting), winter hikes and snow creature building.

            The weekend begins Friday, Jan. 17, and concludes Sunday, Jan. 19, around noon. The 2014 Winter Olympics theme includes “go for the gold hat making” Friday evening. Attendees are challenged to pick a nation and decorate a hat reflecting its culture and history. Opening Ceremonies Saturday evening features the hats, parade and games. Prizes are awarded.

            Reservations for rooms, cabins and meals should be made by Jan, 8, 2014. Reservations are honored on a first-come, first-served basis. A form is online at www.northbendsp.com or by calling Wendy Greene at 304-558-2754. The weekend cost will be $142 per person based on double occupancy. Single occupancy reservations are $167. The rate includes two nights lodging in either the lodge or a cabin, five meals and registration fee, which includes a craft, door prizes and all weekend activities. Lodging for children ages 12 and younger is free. Family rates for cabin occupancy are available.

Notable activities during Winter Wonder Weekend at North Bend State Park include:

  • Winter Hikes
  • Driving tours to Pennsboro Depot, Davis Marbles, Whipple’s Whimsical Toys and Dumpster Divers.
  • Opening Olympic Ceremonies Parade
  • Presentations by noted naturalists Bill Beatty and Sue Olcott
  • Entertainment by Stepping Stone Band
  • North Bend State Park Tour.

            North Bend State Park is located in Ritchie County near Cairo and Harrisville. The park is open year-round and is known for its hospitality, service and family oriented atmosphere.
