LOST CREEK, W.Va. – Watters Smith Memorial State Park in Harrison County is a day-use park that preserves a pioneer homestead of the late 1870s. The park features picnicking and hiking trails in addition to a museum and farm structures.

“Introducing park visitors to our natural surroundings and enjoying the outdoors is important, so we have scheduled special events to encourage visits in 2014,” said Watters Smith State Park Supt. Andy Bennett.

Bennett personally conducts four of the state park system’s most interesting activities. All events begin at the park activity building. He welcomes anyone interested in learning and participating. There is no charge to attend.

Lunar Cycle – April 26, 2014
Watters Smith park hours are extended until midnight for mountain bikers participating in the Lunar Cycle April 26, 2014. Mountain bikers should register in advance to participate. The ride runs from 9 p.m. to midnight. Participants must have appropriate lighting gear. Refreshments and Moon Pies will be available.

Spring Bird Walk – May 10, 2014
An avid birder, Bennett will lead a May 10, 2014, bird walk that begins at 8 a.m. Basic birding skills and a morning walk to survey and record migrating species is part of the activity. Anyone interested in learning more about birds is encouraged to attend.

Nature by Night – June 7, 2014
Hikes and programs conducted on National Trails Day normally are during daylight hours, but at Watters Smith it will be a night hike beginning at 9 p.m. Refreshments and prizes are part of the evening fun. National Trails Day is Saturday, June 7, 2014.

Moth Night – July 26, 2014
This nighttime program will focus on the butterfly’s lesser-known cousins, the moths. Most moths are nocturnal. Bait and light stations will be placed along an easy walking and hiking trail to attract moths. Children are encouraged to bring a bug catcher to help capture and identify moths and other insects. The event begins at 9 p.m., July 26, 2014. Refreshments and snacks are part of the activity. National Moth Week is July 19-27, 2014.
