Spring cleanup with camping at Beech Fork State Park April 5, 2014

BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. - Spring cleaning is usually considered an indoors chore, but for the sixth year, Beech Fork State Park will be asking volunteers to work outdoors to help make the park shine while earning a camping reward. Beech Fork Asst. Supt. Dillard Price and his staff are hosting the sixth annual cleanup at the state park as one of many West Virginia Make It Shine Statewide Cleanup events sponsored by the Department of Environmental Protection and the Division of Highways.

"Over the past several years, volunteers have removed tons of garbage and hundreds of tires," Price said. "The debris accumulates due to illegal dumping and littering upstream from the lake that washes downstream, polluting the water and landscape."

Volunteers interested in participating in the cleanup day April 5, 2014, at Beech Fork State Park should register before the event. A registration form is online at www.beechforksp.com or by calling the state park at 304-528-5794.

Pre-registered volunteers are offered free camping for April 4 and 5 if interested in staying overnight. Families that cannot camp on cleanup weekend will be given a certificate for a two-night campsite rental for later use at the park. Lunch is provided on cleanup day.

Areas will be assigned for cleanup work. Beech Fork State Park usually hosts more than 100 volunteers for this public service day. The cleanup is conducted rain or shine and volunteers should wear boots and work clothes.
