Tygart Lake State Park's 2014 swimming beach reopening is successful Open water skills training event scheduled Aug. 2, 2014

GRAFTON, West Virginia – Tygart lake State Park's swimming beach reopened in 2014 and the park's staff are encouraged and planning expanded hours of operation next year. The beach swimming areas was closed for six years for renovation and to meet safety codes. It reopened in this summer with a renovated bathhouse, sand beach and upgraded picnic and game areas. The beach has become so popular that an open water skills training event has been scheduled for Aug. 2, 9-10 a.m. The goal is to train more life guards so that the beach can be open for more hours next summer.

"This will be a chance for anyone interested in open water life guard training to come visit, watch skill demonstrations and complete a skills swimming challenge to see if individuals have what it takes to complete the next scheduled Open Water Life Guard School," said Tygart Lake State Park Supt. Jim Browning. "If we can create a pool of qualified life guards, we can better serve the community, which includes our immediate area as well as the rest of the state."

Anyone attending will be shown the skills required and will have a first-hand opportunity to try out the tools of the trade, including the rescue swim board. There is no charge for the event.

Lifeguard applications will also be accepted for 2015 employment, creating an advance opportunity to potentially line up a summer job. Attendees interested in life guard positions at other West Virginia State Park system swimming pools will also be accepted. Contact Jim Browning, park superintendent, at 304-518-1759 or email James.L.Browning@wv.gov to ask questions or register for the event. Pre-registration is requested. Candidates should bring swim clothing to participate in the challenges.

Hours of operation at the beach are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday–Sunday, until Aug. 10, and then weekends only Aug. 16-17, Aug. 23-24, and Aug. 30–Sept. 1.
