Eastern bluebird is "Bird of the Month" at Kanawha State Forest Aug. 9, 2014, 2 p.m.

SOUTH CHARLESTON, West Virginia – The eastern bluebird is the featured songbird at Kanawha State Forest in August. The August Bird of the Month (BOM) event is presented by Rob Bailey.  The program begins at 2 p.m. at the swimming pool building Aug. 9, 2014. The program is open to the public without charge.

The Eastern Bluebird (Sialia sialis) is a little thrush that is often seen in open woodlands as well as farmlands and suburban backyards. They can be found east of the Rockies, from southern Canada to the Gulf States and from southeastern Arizona to Nicaragua. The bright blue plumage of the male boldly sets him apart as one of the most beautiful birds that can be seen in West Virginia throughout the year.

The Bird of the Month program is offered each month of the year and is led by a park superintendent, volunteer or Master Naturalist. BOM is just one of many events held at state parks and forests across West Virginia. The full events calendar is online at www.wvstateparks.com.
